As most of us are from traditional south indian families, the attire required for musical events, temple programs and music related activities is common knowledge.

But as a reminder:

ATTIRE IN CLASS

No short shorts! No skirts that are above the knee. Nothing that rides up to mid thigh when we are seated in criss-cross position to sing.

ATTIRE FOR PUBLIC PERFORMANCES

Temple performance – Salwar kameez, chudidhars are allowed. But no spaghetti straps, short tops, sleeveless tops, torn jeans. Bindi for girls and hair in a ponytail/braid is recommended. Boys can wear pants, shirts, kurtas and jeans.

Recitals and other performances – South indian style skirt/blouse, bindi, jewelery, hair in a ponytail/braid is a must! Boys – kurta, pyjama or kurta/pants.

SCHOOL RULES

1. Sit cross legged/indian style – Always!

2. Put Thaala properly on right thigh with right palm.

3. Sing/Practise only with shruthi – no exceptions.

4. Restrain from moving body while singing.

5.Look straight ahead, avoid looking down at book.

6. Listen to shruthi while singing.

7. Do not pause frequently while singing, which will interrupt thaalam.

8. Focus in class and learn what has been taught – this will help in avoiding using a recorderand instead boost memory.

9. Show respect to Guru – not just with gifts but in your choice of words and through conversations.

10. Appreciate parents’ effort in this musical journey.
